I would like to share my opinion on a raw diet. I understand the concept that cooking food can eradicate valuable enzymatic components and our body's must take from the finite pool of enzymes to help in assimilation of the food. I also know that as a result of eating a raw diet for any length of time, I feel great!

OK then, what is all the talk about requiring animal products in our diets? A Few well respected used-to-be raw foodists and some other health pioneers are suggesting that a raw vegan diet may not be ideal as a lifelong diet. The views differ slightly although some of them believe meat in our diets is important for DHA, one of the good fats, allegedly not available in a raw vegan eating plan. From my understanding, DHA is what nourishes our brains and I think it also contributes to ocular health.

Resulting from my study of this "concern" I learned that EFA's are abundant in some nuts, seeds, and plant foods, but not the vital DHA. But, with further study I discovered that there is a product available which has DHA from algae, and algae is vegan.

I also found that, having enough EFA's in our diet from vegetable foods (avocados and walnuts etc.), the body is able to manufacture usable DHA from the fats. Mind you, it might be more "work" than you want to put on your body, and it might need some additional nutritional compounds that could be beneficial in different parts of the body. But, with the abundance of highly absorbable nutrients you get from raw foods, that might not be a concern. However, as mentioned previously, a algae source of DHA is now readily available.

I have no intention to talk about the fallacy that protein is not available from plant food because I hope by now that notion has been proven wrong, but an additional oft-discussed problem surrounding the raw foods diet is the availability of the very important B12 vitamin, that is said to just be found in meat.
